Bio
Bisa Butler is an American artist celebrated for transforming textiles into vivid, expressive portraits that centre Black life, identity and history. Drawing on found photographs, family archives and influences including AfriCOBRA, Romare Bearden and Faith Ringgold, Butler layers richly patterned fabrics to give her subjects renewed presence and meaning. Originally trained as a painter, she turned to quiltmaking during her graduate studies, developing a distinctive approach in which colour, pattern and material carry emotional as well as historical significance. Her work spans portraits of both anonymous individuals and prominent figures, and is held in major museum collections including the Smithsonian, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
